Monroe, NC
Founded in 1844, and named for President James Monroe, Monroe is the county seat for Union County. Like many small towns in the south, the railroad had a huge impact on its growth. The population grow over 300% during the 1870’s after the Carolina Central Railway was completed between Wilmington and Charlotte. Throughout the years, many business have called Monroe home, including Belk department stores getting their start on Main St. The town was also home to two minor league baseball teams in the 1960s and 1970s. The town has continued to expand over the years, and now over 30,000 people call it home.
